Below are some Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Modified Winning Percentage (MWP)?

In simple terms, it measures the quality of players that you compete against, and adjusts your winning percentage accordingly. For example, if Steve Brinster (#18) defeats Dave Feldberg (#10), his MWP gets a bigger bump than if he had beaten Mitch Sonderfan (#42). Similarly, if Steve Brinster loses to Dave Feldberg, his MWP will go down less than if he had lost to Mitch Sonderfan. How is MWP calculated?

Why do some players have a half win and loss?

When two players tie, we count this as a half win and half loss for both players.

I did not play last week, but my MWP and/or Ranking changed. How could this be?

Your MWP, and therefore your Ranking, are directly related to the MWP of everyone you have competed against. As their MWPs change, your MWP will change accordingly. Also, as new players qualify for the rankings, your record against them will affect your wins, losses and MWP.

What events are included in the rankings?

All PDGA Majors, NTs, A-Tier and B-Tier events and the MSDGC and Player's Cup (2005).

Can my event be included in the rankings?

Yes. You must meet the following criteria. First, you must submit your event as a rankings event before the event occurs. Second, you must have at least 15 Pro Open players (the current division the rankings are calculated for). Third, you must have a minimum $1000 payout. And lastly, you must submit the results to us for the Pro Open division within 72 hours of completion of the event. If results are not sent to us in a timely manner, we reserve the right to not include the event.

Why aren't you using all of the wins and losses for each of the players?

Only wins and losses against other qualified players (8 events played, 2 big events played) are counted. This is to help maintain the integrity of the data.

How is a ranking different than the current PDGA Player Rating?

A ranking is based on your record against other qualified players. The more players you beat, the better your ranking. A rating is based on your score relative to the scores of other players.

Using a rough analogy, a ranking is to standings as a rating is to handicaps.

How can these players have so many wins and losses when there are only 52 weekends?

Each player gets one win for each qualified player that they beat, and one loss for each qualified player that they lose to. Therefore, in each event, multiple wins and losses will occur.

Why aren't big events weighted?

The more qualified players there are at any given event, the more important that event is to the rankings as there will be more wins and losses for each qualified player. Therefore a big event will naturally be weighted more heavily than a smallar event. And the beauty of this ranking system is that no one is applying a biased weighting system. The number of players that compete determines the importance of an event.

How many events do I need to play to be included?

In order to qualify, you must compete in eight events, two of which must be big events (Worlds, USDGC, Player's Cup, MSDGC, European Championships, Japan Open, and the PDGA NT events.)

Touring ball golfers play about 25 to 35 events a year, on average. As we reach the point where disc golfers are earning a living playing professionally, we will increase the minimum number of events.

At the four PGA major events, 90% of the top 25 ball golfers compete. By contrast, this number is currently 33% in disc golf. Making a linear scale, we can increase the minimum number of events as the number of top pros going to these events increases.

So the table for the minimum number of events (B-Tiers and above) is:

Percentage of top 25 ranked disc golfers attending big events --> minimum # to qualify for rankings

90% --> 25 events
75% --> 20 events
67% --> 18 events
60% --> 16 events
52% --> 14 events
45% --> 12 events
37% --> 10 events
30% --> 8 events <-- This is where we are in 2005.
22% --> 6 events
15% --> 4 events
7% --> 2 events
0% ---> 0 events

We are currently at 33%, which puts the minimum number of events at 8. At the end of each year, we will determine the percentage of top pros attending big events, and adjust the min. # of events accordingly. Additionally, 1/5th of these events need to be big events.
