Q: I am a beginner and my home course is relatively short (our longest hole is 320 feet). I see many people "driving" with Rocs and Buzzes and one guy even drives with his KC Aviar. What disc should I use? A: This is a great question. It shows that you are thinking about the sport and how best to play it. The quick answer: throw your slowest disc that you can reach the target easily with. Many beginners fall into the trap of always driving with a driver. This is not a good idea. Whether you are on the tee, in the bush, or putting out, you should always select the best disc that will comfortably reach the target. In general, the best disc to use is the slowest disc you can throw that will reach the target - whether the target is a landing zone, an area of the fairway, or the basket. The reason the slow disc is the best disc is that the slower a disc flies, the easier it is to control and the less fade it has at the end of its flight. Better control & less fade = better accuracy, distance and consistency. To demonstrate this to yourself (so that you will believe it and improve your game), go to a local field and throw your drivers, mid-ranges, and putters at about 80% strength (usually you want to avoid throwing a shot that requires full power as this can destroy your accuracy). See how far they fly. When you go to collect them, set up targets at the average putter distance, and at the average mid-range distance. Now throw all the discs at the first target. It should be easier to hit with the putters. Now throw all the discs at the second target - the mid-ranges should garner the best results. It is great that you recognize that your current home course is short, and when you go to longer courses make sure to play within yourself. Make smart shots, make consistent shots, make comfortable shots. Your score, and your psyche, will thank you. Sincerely, Torque Novitski, Marshall Street |
