Q: Which plastic is right for me? A: I've noticed a few different pros that only carry a certain type of plastic. A few only play DX while others throw in Champion, Pro, Z and whatever else. What is the advantage of using only DX or only high end plastics? How can i use plastic types for shot making and shot selection? - tyler - Bend, OR Understanding that I am not necessarily the type of pro you are hoping to hear from, and that I may indeed just be a ficitional character, I decided to get some help. World Champion Des Reading had this to say on the subject. "I love all plastic. It is more important to me how the disc performs for my stlye of throw. I do not switch plastic when it rains or when throwing over water." "I might be your atypical thrower when it comes to plastic that I like. I actually have all types in my bag, with the exception of DX. I have found that DX plastic wears too quickly and I did not like the shuffling of a new disc in my bag every month or so. With that said, I throw KC plastic for my putters and Rocs. I like the bit-a-grippy that I get with the KC Rocs, I feel this allows me to establish feel I need for touch shots. Where as, my KC Aviars are 10xs that are slick to the touch. I like this for putts because tack on putters makes my head want to hold on to the discs. I throw a Proline Leopard and 1st Run Champion TLs for straight wooded shots. I like these slick discs for the woods beacuse they "feel" like they come out fast and clean. Very important when I need fast, clean drives down tight fairways. For my big open shots I throw the Star plastic I like the balance of tack and smooth surface created by this plastic." Thank you Des for your insight! And if I could add one thing, I have found DX plasitc (or Pro D or Suregrip) to be a great way to test out a new disc. If you like the way it feels, the way it releases and the way it flies, perhaps upgrade to a higher end plastic. In the end, it is all about comfort and consistency. Hope this helps.
