02 / 2005:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using 150-class golf discs?
03 / 2005: In looking through my seasoned golf bag, I notice all my plastic is from 1994 or earlier. Should I be concerned? Has the technology improved THAT much?
04 / 2005: Some of my discs have seen better days, but I refuse to let them go. What is the best way to clean them up? What about 'burrs' or other bits of plastic? I see some guys with sandpaper or other coarse material to keep the rims in top shape, but does that change the way the disc will fly?
05 / 2005: I would like to know the dimensions of a standard basket.
06 / 2005: Why do disc characteristic opinions differ so much?
07 / 2005: Torque was on vacation this month.
08 / 2005: I am a beginner and my home course is relatively short (our longest hole is 320 feet). I see many people "driving" with Rocs and Buzzes and one guy even drives with his KC Aviar. What disc should I use?
09 / 2005: Sir Torque, I've been playing for about 2 years and have noticed my game improving, but am still pretty erratic. I'd like to start tracking my score per hole per course in hopes of seeing if I can find a pattern to my double boggies and was wondering if you've seen any good sites/software out there.
10 / 2005: Yo Torque, You seem to be a nice fellow, and you are clearly employed by the goofballs at Marshall Street. So let me put it bluntly, what is Marshall Street doing to promote the sport of disc golf? And how can I benefit from it?
11 / 2005: I just started playing disc golf about six months ago. I'm able to throw my drivers a long way but my mid-range game is terrible. The accuracy and consistency of my approach shots is sorely lacking and I was wondering if there are any exercises or tips you might have to improve upon them. Thanks a lot.
12 / 2005: I have just the opposite problem that Shane had. I have been playing for about 4 months now and cannot get any distance to save my soul. My approaches are good and putting is fair, but the driving kills me. At best I can only get the disc (we are talking top of the line disc here; Beast, Sidewinder, Teebird, all in the 150 class weight) about 150'. In other words if I went out to an open field (and I have done this) and threw all my disc (including putter) they would all end up within 25' of each other. Is there a drill or exercise I can do to help me get more distance? (I am realistic in the fact that I am 65, so I do not expect to be throwing any 400' drives).
01 / 2006: Wow, Torque gets more vacation time than any of us.
02 / 2006: I just read the new lost disc rule. My only question is WHY?
03 / 2006: It doesn't cease to amaze me how big disc golf is really becoming. My question: have you heard anything about disc golf being shown on ESPN, NESN, or any other network? If so, how long do you think it will be until we start to see disc golf tournaments on television?
04 / 2006: A quick follow up to last month's question:
05 / 2006: Which plastic is right for me?
06 / 2006: It's not like his job is that hard or anything.
07 / 2006: I recently played an tournament and par for the course (par 44) was calculated using the formula: over 300 feet par 3 and under 300 feet par 2. This was not an open field that we were playing in and even the shortest holes were challenging enough to be par 3. I think that the concept of making any disc golf hole a par 2 is ridiculous and demands unrealistic expectations and also takes away from the fun of the game. What do you think?
08 / 2006:

Q1: I've been playing for a couple years and I understand most terminology, but I still don't get bead. What is a bead?

Q2: What is the point of age protected niche divisions in amateur ranks?

09 / 2006: I’ve heard different things from different people in regard to storing discs. What do you and Marshall Street recommend? Vertical, horizontal, in bags, any temperature concerns, etc?
10 / 2006: I've heard a lot about discs and the weights. People I've spoken to recommend certain over-stable discs at a lighter weight to prolong glide and maximize distance. Does a gram or two really make much difference? Also, is it recommended to have all the same weights for your discs; driver, mids, putter?
11 / 2006:

Q1: Has anyone measured the speed of a disc golf throw? How fast does a modern driver fly when thrown as hard as possible?

Q2: I have heard that the color of a disc will affect its stability. A light colored disc will take less time to cool off after it has been molded, giving it more of a dome shape with less stability, and a dark colored disc will take longer to cool which sinks the plastic on top giving it a flatter top with more stability. Is there any truth to this or just someone thinking way too hard?

12 / 2006:

Q1: I read somewhere that a Star Teerex is a first run if there is a hyphen in the Teerex hotstamp. Is this true or just someone trying to use it as a selling point on e-bay?

Q2: In New england the term "yorked" is used when someone says "nice shot" just before a fine looking shot hits a tree. Where did this term originate and are there synonymous expressions used in different regions of the country?

01 / 2007: I seem to be getting an extra 20 or more feet from my drives than I was getting in warmer weather. My question is, do colder temperatures add to distance, or am I just getting better?
02 / 2007:

Q1: I saw your column on the speed of golf discs and it got me wondering how fast do they spin?

Q2: How can I estimate how I should shoot on a new course?

03 / 2007:

Q1: Last month, you mentioned that the PDGA calculates a course rating after the first PDGA tournament is held there. How is this different from ball golf? and is it better?

Q2:If i am looking at 2 discs that are identical (weight, plastic, type, etc...) do the flight characteristics change if one of the discs is tie-dyed?

04 / 2007: My uncle has a farm and is open to the idea of putting a disc golf course on it. What kind of baskets should he buy?
05 / 2007: Torque has been busy so we gave him a month off. I guess he does work pretty hard.
06 / 2007: I would like to play in the MSDGC. How can I get in?
07 / 2007: I've been playing disc golf as a recreational hobby for the last couple of years and am just now starting to desire more competitive play. My question is whether you would recommend joining the pdga before I am really ready for the skill levels and if so where do I start?
08 / 2007: This is the month Torque went missing.
09 / 2007: We found Torque tied up in the basement of a ball golf pro shop. He was so good at his job that they stole him for their own evil uses.
10 / 2007: Why do heavier discs fly better in hotter weather and lighter discs fly better in the cold?
11 / 2007: Torque needed more time to recover from his kidnapping so we gave him November off.
12 / 2007: And he decided to not show up to work again in December.
01 / 2008: I've been playing for a few years now and I constantly try to get better. I drive RHBH and over the past 2 months, I've been turning over my drives, (discs immediately leave my hand understable) and it's DRIVIN' me nuts! (Continued in the link)
02 / 2008: It's known that a beat in disc will tend to be more understable. The question I'm asking is, if I take a brand new premium plastic disc and throw it against a tree repeatedly, will this break in the disc or just quickly ruin it. Thank you for your time.
03 / 2008: My friends and I are planning a tournament for this summer, and can't decide whether to apply for PDGA sanctioning. We especially don't like the $10 non-member fee. And, frankly, we're not looking forward to enforcing the no-beer rule. (Continued in the link)
04 / 2008:

I just heard our County Commissioner wants to fund a disc course - Cool! But they are planning to lay it out along a walking trail that gets pretty good use. You have any "words of wisdom" I can use to persuade her that this is not the best location? (Continued in the link)

05 / 2008: I know others whose game has gone downhill because of over-analyzing the game and I'm wondering if that's what's happening to me. (The rest of the question is behind this link)
06 / 2008: Torque gave us 4 good months so he deserves some time off.
07 / 2008: What is the best type of cross training to help improve my game? What muscles need the most attention?
08 / 2008: That's enough time off Torque. Please come back to us.
09 / 2008: Next month is Torques last email. We are all so sad to see him go.
10 / 2008: If I want to continue to play into the cold weather, should I be worried about shattering my discs when the occassional errant throw goes straight into a tree? Any plastics to avoid or discs that handle the cold better than others?
