Let me give you the FD1/FD2/Instinct run down:
After having the FD out for quite some time, Discmania released a disc called the FD2 back when their discs were till made by Innova. It wasn’t quite what they wanted, so they retooled it, and put it out in Shimmer Star plastic for a Konopiste Open fundraiser. That retooled version had a cult following, but also didn’t really take off. So they decided to retool it again and they released it in C-Line plastic, a run referred to as the “three-tooled” FD2, which ended up being super mind-bogglingly popular. If you’ve seen Eagle McMahon throw an FD2, it was one of these three-tooled ones. The C-Line plastic for this run was abnormal as well, it was very stiff and chalky, almost like an old Champion. This run is highly coveted, because shortly after it came out, Covid hit, and Innova stopped making discs for Discmania.
Flash forward through Discmania starting to manufacture their own discs, and they eventually come out with a disc called the FD1, which shared the flight numbers as their old FD2 and the mold shape was pretty similar.
Now, here’s where it gets a little more confusing. As of 2025, Discmania has discontinued most of their Evolution line, and the Evolution line molds that they’ve decided to hang on to will be rereleased under different names in the Originals line. So, what they’ve done, is they’ve taken the FD1 and changed the name back to FD2 (what it was originally, still following?). They did that to open up the FD1 name, so that the Instinct can be rebranded as the FD1.
That being said, it’s really confusing, not just because of everything you’ve already read, but because they’re STILL releasing stock C-Line and S-Line FD1s that haven’t changed at all even though they said the Instinct would be taking the name. So I wonder if they just think that the FD1 and the Instinct are just interchangeable (they’re not) and they think people won’t know or notice? Is naming this disc the FD2 just a marketing ploy to get people to think it’s different?
The FD12stint, is one of the best fairway drivers in disc golf, funnily enough. Especially these Casey White Sky Walkers. Each run has been highly popular, and they fly fantastically.
Somewhat overstable and very controllable fairway driver!
